February 3, 2005

Dear Acolytes/Altar Boys,

I am very excited with this great group of acolytes and altar boys who have been serving in the altar with us since I began the ministry here a month ago.  I can see that you are all dedicated, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and eager to learn even more about serving in the altar.

As you can see on the back side of this letter, we will be having an acolyte/altar boy retreat in a few weeks, and I sincerely hope that all of you can make it.  We’ll be going over a lot of things – some of which you all know very well, and some things that may be new to you.

Please take some time to read over the materials enclosed in this mailing.  One sheet describes the proper conduct and guidelines for people serving in the altar (I have no doubt you all follow these guidelines, but there are a few new items that require your attention).  That sheet is on the reverse side of the acolyte/altar boy group schedule.

Also, please go over the prayers on the third sheet.  It is expected that all altar boys know the Creed and Lord’s Prayer.  This will be very important for something new we will be trying in the near future.  If you don’t know them yet, please do you best to memorize them.  There are also a number of prayers that are said before communion as well as the Cherubic hymn.  You can memorize them if you like, but that isn’t required.  I do, however, want you to be very familiar with them.

Finally, some of the material is also included in Greek.  You do NOT have to memorize anything in Greek, but if you are able to read and understand Greek, it would be useful for you at least to go over them in Greek – and if you feel comfortable and up to the challenge, then perhaps you might learn some of the prayers in Greek by heart.

I look forward to seeing all of you very soon!

In Christ’s love,
Rev. Father Nicolaos H. Kotsis
