The Importance of learning the Greek Language
The Greek language is vitally important to the Orthodox faith because it served as the primary language of early Christianity. The New Testament, the writings of the ecumenical synods, the theology of the Orthodox faith and the liturgical services were written, described and put together primarily through the use of the Greek language.
Learning Greek can provide many additional benefits for any age. By learning the Greek language there is access to the history, literature and philosophy that has been the foundation of the Western civilization. It enhances critical thinking, analytical skills and problem solving through the learning of Greek grammar; it provides vocabulary enhancement since many words stem from Greek roots and it provides the ability to communicate with locals and experience more fully the Greek culture when visiting Greece. The Greek language is also a key link in preserving the Greek tradition and culture. Maintaining the Greek language within the family and community helps to perpetuate Greek cultural values and traditions.
