About Philoptochos

Our Ann Arbor “Good Samaritan” Chapter always welcomes new members.  Membership begins at age 18, and many of our ladies became members when they turned 18.  We support many philanthropic endeavors throughout the year, many of which are monthly projects.  Our list of charities that we support are listed on our home page.

Philoptochos means "friends of the poor" and is the separately incorporated Philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The Society was founded in 1931 by Archbishop Athenagoras; today, Ladies Philoptochos Society chapters are located in every Greek Orthodox parish in the United States and are known as the right hand of the Church.

Our National Philoptochos Mission Statement is:

  • To help the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the Church through fund raising efforts
  • To promote the charitable, benevolent, and philanthropic purposes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America through instructional programs, presentations, lectures, seminars, and other educational resources
  • To preserve and perpetuate Orthodox Christian concepts and the Orthodox Christian Family and through them to promote the Greek Orthodox Faith and traditions in accordance with its doctrines, canons, discipline, divine worship, usages, and customs
  • To promote participation in the activities of the Greek Orthodox community with the cooperation of the Parish Priest and the Parish Council

Philoptochos  also supports national projects which in part include: International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), Support a Mission Priest, Holy Cross Seminary, St. Basil's Academy, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

At the Metropolis level our Philoptochos supports the Metropolis Scholarship Fund, the Metropolis of Detroit Rose City Summer Camp Fund, the Emergency Fund and others as the need arises.
