GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF AMERICA AND IOCC CHARITIES EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND

2/28/2023

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has established an Earthquake Relief Fund to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The focus of the fund is to help with both the immediate needs and the longer-term implications of the devastation from the deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The Archdiocese will partner with International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) to identify trusted organizations for aid distribution. A long-standing and trusted partner, IOCC has a proven track record in humanitarian and emergency relief and will lend its logistical and on-the-ground expertise to ensure effective distribution of funds raised by the Archdiocese. Distribution will be directed primarily to those impacted by the earthquake in Turkey, and, as opportunities to assist are identified, to Syria. On Sunday, March 5, St. Nicholas will pass a tray to support the GOA Earthquake Relief Fund. Please write a check or donate online to St.Nicholas GOC and write on the memo line Earthquake Relief Fund. We will also continue to accept donations until Sunday, March 19. Thank you for your support.

Ann Arbor's First Orthodox Priest:
A Story of Refugeehood, Migration, and the Ecumenical Riches of Greek-Orthodoxy in America

Who was the first Orthodox Priest of Ann Arbor, and what can we learn from his life story today? This talk will follow the twists and turns in the life of Fr. Agathangelos, the first Greek-Orthodox priest to serve the spiritual needs of Ann Arbor nearly a century ago, and reflect on its broader meanings for Greek Orthodoxy in America.  William Stroebel is an Asst. Professor in the Modern Greek Program and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on recovering the refugee literatures displaced by the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923. The lecture will be held Monday, February 20 at 7:00 pm, here at St. Nicholas, and be accompanied with refreshments and a reception after the Q&A.

Please reach out to high school seniors and college students in your parish to inform them of this wonderful opportunity that will help them in pursuing their education.

For any questions or inquiries, please contact Milton Gust at imgust@yahoo.com or 248-689-4156.
Also, you are invited to Zoom webinars to help students complete the 2023 AHEPA District 10 Educational Foundation Scholarship Application. Parents are welcome. The High School Seniors webinar will be on Saturday, January 7th at 10am and will last about 1 hour. The College webinar will follow at 11:30am and will last about 45 minutes.

  • Learn about the scholarship process
  • Learn the changes for this year's application
  • See a live demo of the Scholarship application
  • Ask questions
The purpose of the webinar is to visually show the students the application. If your computer audio is not working, you can dial in to hear the audio portion. It is advised to login about 10 minutes early to ensure you are ready. Contact Mark Przeslawski at (248) 495-6935 if you are having issues.
